Erect or spreading habit, almost black, hard furrowed bark, grey-green foliage and golden-yellow ball shaped flowers in Midwinter to Spring. Good shade tree in warmer areas. Fast growing, but can have tendency to sucker.

Inland specialist from darling downs to mulga lands in central Queensland.


Erect or spreading tree usually 5–20 m high; suckers extensively, particularly following disturbance. Forms extensive open-forest communities usually on fertile clay and loamy clay.


Grows in clay loam soils in full sun. Extremely drought tolerant. Important species in its native range due to extensive historical clearing.
